This training programme has been written by Jeremy Davis
ENT Consultant, Val Gallagher ENT Clinical Nurse Specialist
and Paul Piper Audiological Scientist at the Medway
Maritime Hospital, Kent.
Due
to the lack of training programmes for both audiologists
and Nurses to perform
microsuction they felt it would be beneficial to produce
a training guide that
would be made available to all nurses and audiologists
planning to extend their
role in the area of ear care. Rather than having to
attend a course which is
often costly and time consuming professionals wishing
to learn microsuction
could utilise the learning programme in their own area
of practice. The training
package requires the support of an ENT surgeon or nurse
who can assist with
the assessing, support and competence of the professional
carrying out the training in microsuction. It can be
altered according to the training needs of the individual
and the supervision available. Practice can be enhanced
by the use of a syringe (plunger removed) containing
peanut butter to simulate the ear canal containing wax.
As experience and competence increases consent can be
obtained to remove wax in Day Surgery Units for children
undergoing grommets.
